Cawan Berbisik: White Lies, 2019

  • Cawan Berbisik, is an art project about conversations, sharing and support. The experience of connection between humans and relation build, although maybe only for a brief moment.

Ceramics, whether functional or decorative, are frequently considered static works of art. With this project, I wish to change the way people look at ceramics, or at least facilitate a new perspective. Ceramics can be anything you want, even a medium to either directly or indirectly connect 2 individuals through a previously undetected connection to each other.

  • The idea of deliberately not telling something to protect our loved ones is confusing for me. Especially when it comes to something that can have a direct impact on my state of mind. Even though we cannot control anything that happens in life, it would be great if we were at least prepared for it. This happened to me with my mother. Because she thinks that I would be worried of her well-being, she never told me what was really going on concerning her health. Few months ago she had a stroke and as a result couldn’t really talk, leaving me to  only hear whispers and thoughts.

My work is portrayal of such a well-meant condition. Using a common shape of ceramic function in a subtle way to create the illusion that everything seems to be just fine. Laid out on a rather exceptional approach within homewares to make it strange enough to notice that is not just fine at all.

  • Every person has a secret that they hide from another person. The reason is to protect the one you hide it from. (or yourself….) With this art piece, the artist invites you to whisper a secret or secrets that you kept from your love or loved ones that you’ve dying to tell her/him for so long into the “Cawan Berbisik”.

  • Pick your “Cawan Berbisik” then whisper a secret or secrets into it

Write recipient name in the bottom of it and place it on the display area

Write down your email on the clipboard

The artist will personally email you and ask your recipient home address. He will send your “Cawan Berbisik” to them without telling your name along with a written letter to explain the purpose of the art piece. If further follow up actions are requested by either the sender of the recipient, the artist mediates between the two.

60 Cawan, 20 emails replied and Cawan sent. Only one person who eventually met their Cawan recipient.

email from the one participant notified me that finally met and talked with the cawan recipient.

  • Dear Yugie,

It has been quite a while, but I still want to say thank you for the initiation of the Cawan Berbisik from you. My brother had received the cawan at the end of February or early March. We then met and exchanged stories. I conveyed a message to him and vice versa, in that moment it creates a safe space for him to share a side of himself that I didn't know about, the difficulties he was going through. The presence of the Cawan Berbisik opened a deep conversation between us. Thank you for echoing the essential matters through this. God bless you and the works that you has created.

    Regards,

40 Cawan were unsent due to un-replied emails.
